2023 Summer Nick Donofrio News Internship, New England News Collaborative (*Part-time, remote work option)

Update: This internship has been filled.

The NENC is excited to offer an 11-week summer news internship this year. The intern will learn to research, pitch and prepare stories for audiences across New England on broadcast, digital and social media platforms. Working closely with the collaborative’s editorial team, the intern will also learn about best practices in collaborative journalism, with a strong focus on incorporating principles of diversity, equity and inclusion to strengthen our work.

This is a part-time internship with a maximum of 20 hours per week, ideally spanning June 5 to August 18. The exact working hours will be determined by the intern and NENC editor.

The Nick Donofrio News internship emphasizes students attending Connecticut community colleges, with special focus on students at Gateway, Capital, Middlesex Center for New Media, Naugatuck, and Manchester Community Colleges. Priority placement is given to students within this system; however, students from other colleges and universities are welcome to apply.

This is a remote-friendly position that can be based at Connecticut Public in Hartford, or it can be remote from any location in New England. Access to a car and the ability to report in the field is not required but would strengthen the experience.

Essential tasks include:

  • Research and pitch story ideas for multiple platforms, including broadcast, digital and social.
  • Collect audio and conduct interviews virtually and in person.
  • Record, edit, and mix audio.
  • Research or produce visual or social media assets, in coordination with our NENC Visuals Journalist.
  • Write strong digital stories with regional angles.
  • Produce both daily and longer-term stories.
  • Deliver high-quality content on tight deadlines.
  • Track diversity of news sources.
  • Participate in news meetings held virtually.

The Nick Donofrio News Intern will be paid biweekly at $15/hour by Connecticut Public, lead station of the NENC. Other partner stations include NPR affiliates WBUR, GBH, Vermont Public, New Hampshire Public Radio, Maine Public, New England Public Media, WSHU and CAI Cape and Islands.

We recognize candidates might not fit every qualification. If that’s you, we still encourage you to apply. Let us know about you and your talents.
