Greetings of As-salaam-Alaikum — “Peace be unto you” — echo throughout a conference room in downtown Philadelphia. Muslim voters from around the country settle in with smiles, handshakes and hugs. An imam opens the luncheon with a prayer.

With back-to-back political conventions in the deep of summer, you’d be forgiven for losing track which was in Cleveland and which was in Philadelphia. In fact, if you strip away the politics, the conventions themselves actually have a few things in common — most notably that with Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump, both parties are nominating candidates unlike any other in modern history.

Jill Stein is on the ballot in 22 states and Washington, D.C. She’ll need a thousand signatures by September to add Rhode Island to the list.

The Republican National Convention in Cleveland wraps up today following a speech by Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump. Many of the fears we had for the convention – about protests turned violent, an overwhelmed Cleveland police department, and an unexpected coup by insurgents from the anti-Trump movement – never came to pass.

On Tuesday, Republican delegates from across the country gathered at a benefit BBQ and concert hosted in part by former Massachusetts U.S. Sen. Scott Brown. Brown’s daughter Ayla sang country music and played guitar on stage while beach balls and hats were tossed into the crowd.

The outcome of the Republican National Convention in Cleveland is predetermined: Donald Trump will get his party’s nomination for president. But there was controversy nonetheless for the 16-person Vermont delegation.
